finally! questions from da lee
1. Who is your favorite artist? Why?
My best friend leahley. I can look at a hundred famous artists that inspire me for up to a month at a time but there’s something way more inspiring and special about art that you have seen up close, that you have seen grow. And especially to see how it reflects the soul of someone you know and love. http://leahley.com/personal-work Her aesthetic is graceful and bold and and at the same time understated and something about it has always moved me, even when we were just kiddos making watercolors of the fall leaves. We grew side-by-side in our art at its most foundational years, and that is irreplaceable.
2. Have you traveled somewhere that has left an impact on you? If so, where and how? Also, what is the top place you wish to go?
A tribe in Palawan, Philippines I will never know the name of. I used to chase waterfalls, rare sea creatures, and the top dive sites all over the world, but this simple, quiet village next to a river changed my heart for traveling. I’ll never forget sketching the kids next to their church-hut when they looked at me *as a foreigner* and those same kids grabbing my hands *as friends* to play in the river for hours on end. I found there moments that transcend language and all other barriers of being an outsider.
Bali, Indonesia. Both my parents backpacked there around my age.
3. What is your favorite memory as a child?
watching meteor showers on our roof in hawai’i where my dad taught me how to look for constellations, lectured me about its importance in early navigation and sailing, and told bad jokes about the dog that would answer “roof” if you’d ask where we were right then.
4. If you could produce a movie, what would it be about/what would it be named? the bun club. it would be a whole movie full of people making bunny faces and speaking in the bun voice. fo realz.
5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I have no clue. But i have this crazy idea I might be a missionary in a tribe of unreached peoples. I have this crazier idea that might be married. That one’s a longshot.
6. What tattoo(s) would you get and why?
a compass on my wrist for my Dad when he dies(which might be never because he’s a hard ass who’ll probably be surfing till he’s 90), As directionally dyslexic as I am on land, he did teach me how to navigate the ocean.
a tiny anchor on my heal with my best bud, even if we’re continents apart I consider that a friendship to be rooted in for life.
“bun club” one word on each butt cheek. don’t ask.
7. What would your dream date consist of?
I never thought I’d say this but my whole long distance relationship is one big dream date. I get to share a part of life with my best manfriend (sleeplessinathens.blogspot.com), chasing trains tracks and fire escapes at sunrise, having picnics on rooftops and taking camping road trips. When we’re not together, falling asleep side-by-side over Skype and dreaming about more adventures.
8. What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment?
Just getting through high school years. It’s a bit of a blur but my mom tells me stories about me holing up in my room for months at a time and emerging with amazing but really dark artwork. I almost didn’t survive but I owe it all to God for His grace in pulling me out of that darkness.
9. What are your most prized possessions?
Most of the time I feel like I’m living out of a suitcase, but I never go anywhere without my bible, a camera, and often some living thing i’m taking care of at the time like a fish or a cactus.
10. What would you name yourself if you could?
